Member Card

INTERAC® Flash

We are replacing all MemberCard debit cards with new cards between July 2015 and October 2016.  When your MEMBER CARD® debit card is up for renewal, or if you get a new one in-branch, you will receive a new, sleeker looking MEMBER CARD debit card with INTERAC® Flash.

Upon receipt of your new MEMBER CARD debit card in the mail, start using that new card with your current PIN right away.  You should also destroy and securely dispose of your current MEMBER CARD.

Note:  If you have attended or contacted the branch to order a new MEMBER CARD debit card, the card will come in the mail first, followed by the PIN a few days later.  You can change your PIN at any Canadian credit union ATM that displays the ACCULINK® symbol or drop by a Bow Valley Credit Union branch.

Don't Get Locked Out!

If you’ve received a new MEMBER CARD debit card in the mail, that means your old card is about to expire.

In order to ensure you don’t experience any service disruption in Online Banking, you will need to log into the Bow Valley Mobile App or Online Banking with your new number within 90 days of receiving the new card.  All your Increased Authentication Settings (security questions/answers) PAC, eTranfer profiles and Member Direct Small Business features such as delegate access will be automatically transfered over to your new debit card.

Once you log into Member Direct with your new Card PAN, the old PAN will be de-activiated.

You will see a message if you are using the Memorized Account feature, and the only thing you will need to do is update your account information to reflect the new PAN.

What is Flash?

INTERAC Flash is a contactless enhancement of INTERAC Debit.

You simply pay in a ‘flash’ by holding your card up to a reader that supports INTERAC Flash to make your payment instantly. There is no need to insert your card or enter your PIN.

Is it secure?
Yes it is secure. INTERAC Flash uses secure chip processing to protect against skimming, counterfeiting and electronic pick-pocketing.

Is there a limit to how much I can spend using INTERAC Flash technology?
There are transaction limits for purchases made using INTERAC Flash. A single transaction can’t exceed $100. If your purchase is above this limit, you will be prompted to insert your card and enter your PIN.

There is also a cumulative limit. After you have reached a total spend of $200, you will need to insert your chip and enter your PIN.  This will reset the limit.

Do I have to use the INTERAC Flash technology?
You don’t need to use the INTERAC Flash technology if you choose not to. Alternatively, the process for using your debit card is easy and convenient both at an ATM and when making purchases at a merchant location. Insert the card into the ATM or point-of-sale terminal and follow the prompts on the screen.

Can I use my INTERAC Flash debit card everywhere?
Your INTERAC Flash debit card will work even if the merchant does not have a INTERAC Flash reader. Instead, you will insert your card and enter your PIN.  Over time more and more retailers will be installing INTERAC Flash readers for your convenience.

Can I change my PIN?
If you know your existing PIN, you can change it at any credit union ATM that displays the ACCULINK® symbol. You can also change your PIN at any Bow Valley Credit Union branch if you have forgotten it or feel it should be changed.

Protect Your PIN

You can help keep your money safe by protecting your personal identification number (PIN) and following these guidelines:

  • Use your hand or body to shield your personal identification number (PIN) when you are conducting transactions at an ATM or point-of-sale.
  • Never let your debit card out of your sight when conducting a transaction. Only allow your card to be swiped once and always remember to take your debit card and transaction record with you once your transaction is complete.
  • Regularly check your statements and balances to verify all transactions have been properly documented. If entries are not accurate (e.g., if there are missing or additional transactions) contact your branch immediately.
  • If your debit card is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, notify your branch as soon as possible.
  • Your debit card and PIN are the keys to your account(s). Never disclose your PIN to anyone or you could be liable for losses. You are the only person who should know it. Keep your card in a safe place and never lend it to anyone.
  • Memorize your PIN - it's your electronic signature. If you suspect someone knows your PIN, change it immediately or contact your branch to cancel the card and obtain a new card.
  • When selecting your PIN, never use obvious information. You could be liable for losses if you create your PIN by using, for example, your telephone number, date of birth, address or social insurance number.
  • Conduct transactions only when and where you feel secure. If anyone tries to distract you, complete what you are doing and retrieve your card before doing anything else. If you cannot retrieve your card, call your branch immediately.
